# Accounts Receivable Turnover Ratio: Formula, Calculation & How to Improve It
Your accounts receivable turnover ratio tells you how efficiently your business collects on the credit it extends to customers.
The formula
**Accounts Receivable Turnover Ratio = Net Credit Sales ÷ Average Accounts Receivable**
Where: - **Net Credit Sales** = total sales made on credit during the period, minus any returns or allowances - **Average Accounts Receivable** = (Beginning A/R + Ending A/R) ÷ 2, for that same period
The result tells you how many times, on average, you collect your outstanding receivables balance over the course of the period (usually a year).
A worked example
Say your business had: - Net credit sales for the year: $2,400,000 - Accounts receivable at the start of the year: $250,000 - Accounts receivable at the end of the year: $350,000
First, calculate average A/R: ($250,000 + $350,000) ÷ 2 = $300,000
Then apply the formula: $2,400,000 ÷ $300,000 = **8**
A turnover ratio of 8 means you collected your average outstanding receivables balance eight times over the course of the year — roughly once every 45 days.
What counts as a "good" ratio
There's no single universal benchmark — it depends heavily on your industry and payment terms. A business on Net 30 terms should generally see a higher turnover ratio than one on Net 90 terms, simply because the collection cycle is shorter by design.
